According to Freud, the ego is supposed to be our reality check and referee between the id and the super-ego. It is like the checks and balances of our brain and how we process external events. Freud also said that when reality goes against our super-ego, defense mechanisms are put into place causing devastating emotions. From all this, I think what Freud means is that the ego is the little voice in our heads that tells us how we should feel about something. It is supposed to be good for us, but unfortunately, ugly emotions negatively affect that little voice and “muddy” the waters, so to speak.. I think there are at least 4 negative emotions that keep us from being happy and healthy human beings.
Number one emotion that keeps us from achieving our dreams and happiness is FEAR! I don’t know how many posts I’ve already written that describe how fear gets in the way. Go back and read them!
Jealousy will drive away everyone you care about. It is an ugly emotion that causes ugly actions. Be comfortable in your own skin. To quote Miley Cyrus: “”Forget the haters, cuz somebody loves ya”
Worry is an emotion that will waste your life away. Why worry about things that may never happen? This emotion will inhibit you from taking chances and achieving great reward.
Anxiety is closely related to worry. Anxiety is unhealthy because it causes a great deal of stress which causes a myriad of bad health problems. Talking and/or keeping a journal could keep anxiety at bay.
The bottom line is that you should let your ego do its job. If you cut out the negative emotions, you will more easily reach your goals and simply be happy.
